Cozumel Information
|
Famous
all over the world for its coral reefs, there
are plenty of water sports such as diving,
deep-sea fishing, snorkelling, kayaking and
more. Cozumel's mostly undeveloped territory at
the center of the island is covered by jungle
and swampy lagoons, which are home to tiny
mammals and endemic birds that have never left
the island.
Cozumel (Mayan: Island of the Swallows) (Kłutsmil
in Modern Maya) is an island in the Caribbean
Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan
Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen, and close
to the Yucatan Channel. Cozumel is one of the
nine municipalities (municipios) of the state of
Quintana Roo. Cozumel is a tourist destination
for its scuba diving and snorkelling. The main
town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel.
East side of the island is beautiful but the
waves make it so that it's dangerous to swim and
the snorkeling there is non existent. There's
not a lot of development along this side of the
island, the hotels and resorts are all on the
west side.
There is a large Ecological Reserve, with four
parts to the excursion. A lighthouse and museum,
and a Zona de Cocodrilos which I have written up
as separate Off the Beaten Track Tips, a small
Mayan ruin called El Caracol, and a beach where
we snorkel. There is also a turtle sanctuary.

One
of the most awaited and colorful celebrations on
the Island, usually held in February, depending
on the date of Easter. Carnival is a celebration
in which the whole town participates with people
of all ages in costumed dances, parades, parties
filling up bars and restaurants.
